When I lifted you level to me and a wattle tree framed your body.
In whispers welling with the dope of a new Spring
You said "Kill me a dynasty or our love won't mean a thing..."
A bullet for a diamond ring.
A favour promised
A promise delivered and more to you -
It's only a war I'll be back to your shore before you know it I'm gone,
Then I'll cover you body.
And if you have to go please go lightly,
Keep it to a foxtrot whether he's a fox or not.
Keep it cold, keep all your heat for me -
I'll be needing it for when I'm cold you see?
Let your children remind you of me
Whether by another or by the ghost in me in you -
There goes my baby.
I would think of you and a palmtree would cover your body.
You - in love and war we are bound by a law,
it goes to you and then to yours to recover my body.
She bound me up and hugged me
'O how the mother loves thee'
She covered my body
In a ragged flag and bloody -
O not on your life.
Name: John Winchester
Canon: Supernatural (TV)
History: The first we know of John Winchester in canon was that he served in Echo company of an unknown division of the US Marine Corps, long enough to be promoted to corporal. He was discharged from the service in the late 1970s sometime, exact date unknown. He may or may not have served in Vietnam, but there has been no mention of it in canon.
John then married his wife Mary sometime between 1979 and 1980, and their first child, Dean, was born in 1980. A second son, Sam, followed in late 1982. By all accounts the family life was happy.
When Sam was about six months old, however, a mysterious house fire broke out in their Lawrence, KS home; some kind of supernatural presence had entered the house, killing Mary and pinning her body to the ceiling somehow. When her body was discovered, it erupted into flames, burning the entire home. John swore vengeance on his wife's killer and for the next twenty years or so devoted his life to hunting.
Finally, however, he and Sam and Dean (once of hunting age) got a lead on The Demon, and faced it, only to let it slip away. It possessed John, and young Sam would not shoot his own father, even to kill his mother's murderer. On their way out of town, the Winchesters' car was hit by a truck (possessed by the Demon), landing John and his sons in the hospital.
Once at the hospital, John and Sam recovered fairly quickly, but Dean remained in critical condition. To try and save his son, John summoned a demon, and made a deal - himself and a special weapon, used for demon hunting, in exchange for Dean's life. The demon accepted the deal, and after Dean "miraculously" woke up, John was found dead on the floor of his hospital room.
Personality: John has become far colder than he originally was. When his sons were young and his wife was alive, he was a kind, thoughtful, loving if strict father. Without his wife's sweetness to temper his tendencies, John became a sort of petty dictator. He did what he had to to keep his sons safe, but over time that evolved into simply a need to be obeyed.
He is not a brute – indeed, he's almost sensitive. Soulful. He doesn't want justice; that's a belief. He wants vengeance; that's a passion. It's as if he is still an active Marine - he hates what he has become on some level, but he is unapologetic nonetheless. That mission comes before anything, even his boys' childhood. He raises his sons like little warriors, as Sam puts it in the pilot. John would never do anything to intentionally hurt either of his sons, but he's too focused on his mission to give them anything approaching normalcy.
John also tends to avoid most women or at least any non-platonic contact with women. His wife was the love of his life; even twenty years after the fact he can't stand the thought of being with anyone but Mary. He isn't sexless – he's incredibly passionate, actually, and is capable of falling for the right woman – but he still regards it as cheating. At the very least we've seen no trace of any canonical romantic interest other than his dead wife.
Overall, the first impression one might get of John Winchester is of a quiet man, introspective - indeed, almost placid unless you get him going. But the way he carries himself and his dark eyes would show a less casual observer that he's a man with a purpose. This may change after his death, after seeing what it has done to his sons, but that remains to be seen.
Point of Entrance: After his death - only aware of up to 2x01 "In My Time of Dying" in canon.
